Parents' Meetings: When?

I've always thought about a real engagement of parents in school activities, practices, and school life in general.
Is there something more efficient for our students in our context than what is actually done?

I must admit that most of what is done at schools under “parents’ meetings” is mere boastfulness. Yes, they are conducted, but how efficient can they be, the way they are conducted??

I've always thought about introducing something new to our schools: a teacher-parent meeting at the very beginning of the scholastic year. As what we study at our faculty, in both graduate and undergraduate curricula, is new somehow to both parents and educators at our regions, we actually need such kind of meetings. Then, we would introduce different things to parents: modes of conduct, strategies used, how they can help us in tutoring their kids, social skills to be mastered and how, and many other things. By doing this, respectfully, parents would really feel they can effective players in the game of educating their children. This way, I believe a large portion of parents will be positively affected and motivated to give more care to their role and its efficiency, especially if things were presented in a positive, pleasant way.

Then, the cooperation in actions, directions, and beliefs will drive students to feel some conformity in their surrounding, wherever they are.
Gradually, follow up meetings are to be conducted, and things would develop throughout the year, along with matching individual needs with parents.
Little by little, a real change can be affected in society, via efficient teacher-parent meetings.

  1. Yes indeed Hanaa. I honestly feel that the parents meeting done in our schools are not as effective as it should be. The parents just crowd and few important comments are given by the teacher. So I agree with the plan you did to have healthier meetings.

  2. i agree with that parents meetings in schools are not effective and they are done once or twice a year just because they should be done. another issue is that when these meetings are conducted they are not done professionaly, parents all around gathered around one teacher.

  3. The question would be: will these meetings ever be effective? especially in Lebanon most parents aren't equipped with the right tools to guide and work with schools to educate their children. Most parents see schools as places to keep children in so that they can get some free time to rest. Therefore, how can change such thought???

  4. In fact you are 100 % right, teachers alone can't be effective as if there is cooperation between parents and teachers. To me meeting days are really horrible when i have to meet more than hundred parent in three hours. i can be effective with the first 30 maximum then i just hope not to have anymore parents cause I feel that am really not able to give them effective comments and advises specific to students' needs. I don't agree so much with Zeinab, cause parents are caring more for education, but they don't know how to really support their children.

  5. well this is very important. many consider that such meetings are useless. this is because the way they are done. all students no matter what their achievement is are treated in these meetings the same. while this shouldn't be the case. each teacher should have enough time to sit with the parents and discuss the strengths as well as the weakness of each student. by this way they would much more effective as you said
